The Maine Literacy Council (formerly the Maine Reading Association) is a group of literacy-minded colleagues who seek to promote reading and writing in our schools, homes, and communities. We are the state affiliate of the International Literacy Association (formerly the International Reading Association-IRA). We chose the name council rather than Association because the acronym MLA is already heavily used to represent other groups (Modern Language Association, Maine Lobstermen's Association, and the Maine Library Association-not to mention similiar groups in Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, etc).
Because Maine is a geographically large state, we do not meet face to face frequently-perhaps a few times each year. You can connect with us and other members through our social media platforms. We maintain a Facebook page and you can follow us on Twitter @MaineLiteracy #MELit and email us at
We host a few events each year, with the hope of adding other offerings if the interest and participation are there. We will again be offering our FALL BOOK BONANZA in October and are looking for feedback on members' interestss and needs. Please email us, or respond on the membership form to share YOUR ideas.
